Statements

A generic term to describe the climate variability of the tropical Atlantic which is dominated at interannual to decadal time scales by two main climate modes: the Atlantic Zonal Mode (AZM) and the Atlantic Meridional Mode (AMM). The Atlantic Zonal Mode, also commonly referred to as the Atlantic Niño or Atlantic equatorial mode, is associated with sea surface temperature anomalies near the equator, peaking in the eastern basin, while the Atlantic meridional mode is characterized by an inter-hemispheric gradient of sea surface temperature and wind anomalies. Both modes are associated with significant teleconnections over Africa and South America. (English)
